Gear knob

I tried to change the gear knob on my astra for a "universal" one that looks the biz. When I removed the rubber part there was a thick metal part that the gear knob I have wont fit over. I have asked a few people and have got different opinions, one boy told me to cut the metal part and I would be able to fit the new one but I thought it might affect the lift-up reverse and didnt want to mess it up. Someone else told me I would have to get an irmscher one that will fit straight on but they are quite dear.

Can anyone suggest an easy/cheap way to get it on?
